Some Questions: Why is it difficult for small businesses and start-ups to hire ?

Let’s say, you are working for a start up or you are the promoter for a start up. Over  a period of time, you realise that it’s difficult to hire quality talent – specially for a new company, small company or start-up.

You have tried multiple ways to get good people – You sign up for job postings and data base access of leading job portals. You waste some time flagging off the positions on social networks, and then you realise you cannot do much. You get tonnes of applications, you interview tonnes of people while nothing clicks. You don’t find people up to mark, you don’t find them relevant, and possibly some of them don’t get excited about the opportunity.

Finally with a heavy heart, you decide to approach the recruitment firms to help you with the hiring. We say, with a heavy heart – as hiring from recruitment consultants is expensive. It looks expensive, and more so for a start up. But still you go ahead and try to get some consultants to work on your position. It occurs that if you are able to fill a position with quality talent in a timely manner, the fees of a recruitment consultant will appear to be a well spent business expense.

But once again a problem – you realise that most recruitment consultants are not really able to help you. It’s the same story. They send a lot of candidates, none are relevant. In fact some consultants may actually deny taking up the assignment, citing that they may not be able to service the same.

So what’s the problem ?

  • Why have you not been able to get quality talent ?
  • Why have the recruitment consultants not been able to help you ?
  • Why are the job postings at job portals not much effective ?
  • Why don’t some consultants want to pick up the search assignment ?

We will get back with another post with our perspectives on the case. Meanwhile, would love to hear from you on the same.
