4 reasons why your resume was not shortlisted for that cool job?

  1. The Objective statement on your resume confuses the recruiter and hiring manager. May be it positions you as a jack of all trades while they are looking for some specialist, or maybe it positions you as an SME while they are looking for a generalist operations guy.
  2. Your resume ends up boring the recruiter and the hiring manager with tonnes of details about all your past projects. You need to only write what’s specific, relevant and critical for the level for which you are positioning your resume. For example – if you are positioning your resume for business head role at a mid-size company, please stop adding operational activities from your first job or internship as your achievements. Let some maturity be seen in your resume.
  3. The Recruiter does not have an appropriate brief from the hiring manager. This is the most common problem as hiring managers are not sure of the skills they are looking at. Even in a mature business scenario they are willing to tweak the position to suit a “preferred” potential candidate. So they keep looking for the most ideal candidate as per their “limited” understanding of their own situation.
  4. Your experience does not fit the bill. May be its really off track. So go back, check the position brief and relate your experiences to the job requirements. At times we are so desperate for a job that we try to force fit our interests and skills to pitch for any available job.
