Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta was appointed as the Solicitor General of India by the central government on Wednesday.
The place was vacant since the resignation of senior advocate Ranjit Kumar. He announced his resignation on October 20 last year and the government accepted it by December.
The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Mehta with effect from the date of assumption of charge of the office for a period till June 30, 2020, or until further orders.
Mehta was the advocate general of Gujarat when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister of the state.
He was appointed as Additional Solicitor General in 2014 by Narendra Modi after the BJP-led NDA government came to power in the center.
Recently, Mehta was named as the special prosecutor to handle the 2G spectrum case. Earlier he has represented the center in many significant cases including the challenge to Section 66A of Information Technology Act.
