MDP: Excellence in Corporate Training – February 2020

Date: 18 – 19 February 2020

Research from the fields of cognitive science and education have much to offer corporate training programs. Specifically, training programs can be made more effective and efficient if trainers apply concepts of learning such as encoding, spacing, interleaving, and chunking in the design and delivery of training programs. Further, to better engage trainees, trainers can learn to author “customized” content by writing mini cases and short briefs, and use technology to involve trainees with the help of in-program and pre-program activities. Additionally, with the use of active learning tools like peer-instruction, reflective-inquiry, and action-planning, training transfer (the transfer of learning from the program to the workplace) can become the expected norm after any program. Finally, trainers can learn to assess post-training impact, and evaluate the return on investment of training, so that training programs’ value-for-business and value-for-money are addressed.

Program Objectives:

Participants of the program will learn to:
Apply research-based  “learning drivers” in the design and delivery of training programs, enabling deep-rooted learning among the trainees

  • Write short cases (using original material, or adapted material), and thus learn the art of writing customized content to better engage and involve trainees.
  • Use powerful discussion techniques and active-learning tools to ensure trainee engagement and learning during the program.
  • Use technology to involve, engage, and track trainees during the program, and with pre-program preparation
  • Enable the transfer of training to the workplace
  • Estimate the impact of training programmes.

Coverage:

The content addresses various questions of interest in the design and delivery of corporate training programs.

What produces long term learning in training programs?
(Day 1, Sessions 1-2)

We focus on research-based “learning drivers”, including encoding, spacing, interleaving, chunking, and reflective retrieval to ensure trainees achieve deep-rooted learning.

What pedagogical approaches are effective in training?
(Day 1, Sessions 3-4; Day 2, Session 1)

Various tried and tested pedagogies are taught, including the use of traditional cases and “brief cases”, and various approaches to case analysis, including the effective management of case discussions and the use of learning tools like peer-instruction and reflective inquiry. Further, we cover the art of writing short-cases (be it original content or adapted content) to (a) ensure interest and relevance to trainees, and (b) enhance the credibility of trainers when they run training programs with their authored content.

How do we ensure trainees are involved and engaged in training programs?
(Day 2, Session 2)

We demonstrate innovative technology that can be used to involve, engage, and track trainees during training programs, as well as involve, engage, and track trainees’ preparation prior to start of training programs.

How do we enable and assess the business impact of training?
(Day 2, Sessions 3-4)

Business impact of training is directly related to “transfer of learning” from training programs to the workplace. We address methods that enable learning transfer, including factors that make trainees “transfer ready”. Methods to assess the business impact of training transfer (i.e. the application of training) are also dealt with
