Avoid using your official e-mail account to send your job application to a recruiter ..

A number of professionals, at times end up sending their resumes & job application using their official e-mail accounts. Some are also in the habit of registering on job portals using their official e mail id’s.   This habit / practice / ignorance is difficult to understand, specially when it should be simple to understand that – your business e-mail id is for official purposes and belongs to “your businesses”. Your job search is your personal priority.

One simple suggestion from our end – this is not a good thing to do & it may also not even be ethical or permissible as per your company’s policies.

Why you should abstain from the practice of using your official email account to send job applications ?

  • Your present employers may not like the misuse of official e-mail id. Remember the IT security guys can provide a hint off to your boss etc. If you don’t end up landing up some job outside, there may be possibility of facing the heat in your present employment.
  • Some negative assumptions , notions may be developed about you if a recruiter receives your resume from your official email account. And well some of these can clearly end up being a disqualifier in most cases.
  • Recruiters may feel that you are too desperate to apply for the job, that you could not wait to go home & log on to your personal e-mail account to send the resume.
  • Hiring managers / HR guys may perceive you to be either lazy or arrogant or ignorant.
    • Ignorance: not having an understanding of use / misuse of company’s resources.
    • Lacking on ethics. (Now how many employers want employees poor on ethics ?)
    • Arrogance , showing your disregard for your job / employer / company / manager.
  • Those who always look at the brighter side may feel:
    • You have some sense of belongingness to your company. (Some may wonder, if you are so attached to your employer , why are you looking for a job any ways ? )
    • Feeling of pride / attachment to a business email id for the brand. (At times this happens when you align your value and self worth to your job and the brand you work for. Does not actually reflects well on your talent and competence.)
  • Some may feel that your credentials may doubtful & you have send your resume from your business id – just to demonstrate that you actually are in a job with the company as mentioned in your resume.
  • Recruiters in many recruitment consultancies may not even notice, as they are all so concerned with your resume and confirmation of your interest for a job opening. Even hiring managers in many company’s may not bother. ( So in these situations you may get away and may not end up being penalised.)

Well there can be lots of other similar / different ways in which your action is interpreted by a recruiter / a hiring manager etc. if you send your resume through your official e-mail id. I am sure you would want to keep life simple – let the recruiters evaluate your resume – your qualifications and experience and not form opinions based on a simple mess up.

Always use your personal e mail account for any thing that’s non official – including your job search initiatives.
