Facebook Inc. has a lot of updates for market these days. After its $1 billion purchase of the start-up behind the photo sharing smartphone application ‘Instagram’ and a multi-billion-dollar debut on the stock market, it has acquired the "social discovery" startup Glancee. This is dubbed as Facebook’s second major acquisition this year after Instagram, and gives an indication of Facebook enhancing and building up its expertise in mobile technology.

Glancee founders are behind a smartphone application for discovering like-minded connections and meeting interesting people nearby. The company was founded by Andrea Vaccari, Alberto Tretti, and Gabriel Grise and has been a closely knit company with a small team. While the details of the deal are not yet disclosed – as a part of the deal Facebook would take over all of Glancee’s technology and its team members.  Glancee’s app tracks users location and offers suggestions on people with similar interest by comparing their social profiles on Twitter and Facebook .

As per a message on Glancee’s web site:

“ We started Glancee in 2010 with the goal of bringing together the best of your physical and digital worlds. We wanted to make it easy to discover the hidden connections around you, and to meet interesting people. Since then Glancee has connected thousands of people, empowering serendipity and pioneering social discovery.

We are therefore very excited to announce that Facebook has acquired Glancee and that we have joined the team in Menlo Park to build great products for over 900 million Facebook users. We’ve had such a blast connecting people through Glancee, and we truly thank our users for being a part of the Glancee community.“
