Hasura raises $9.9M in Series A funding round

Bengaluru and San Francisco-based Hasura recently announced that it has raised $9.9mn in Series A funding round led by Vertex Ventures US. The funding round saw participation from existing investor Nexus Venture Partners and Strive VC along with SAP’s early-stage venture arm SAP.iO Fund.

Hasura works to solve developer problems around connecting to databases when using the open-source GraphQL tool. Other angel investors who participated in the funding round include Firebase founder James Tamplin, Sam Lambert (VP of Infrastructure Engineering at GitHub), Udaan Co-founder Amod Malvia and Michael Stoppelman (ex-SVP of Engineering at Yelp).

The company plans to use these funds to invest heavily in engineering and product development, notably providing more ready-made integrations with databases and other data sources. The company also plans to hire people across sales and marketing.

With the latest investment, the company so far has raised $11.5mn in funding. Earlier in 2018, the company had raised $1.6mn from Nexus Venture Partners.

Founded by Tanmai Gopal and Rajoshi Ghosh, Hasura provides data access and data flow tools and services via GraphQL APIs, a solution to accelerate product and data delivery. The company’s technology automatically creates realtime GraphQL APIs, granting customers instant access to their data via secure APIs.

Hasura CEO and Co-founder Tanmai Gopal said that the company had been working on helping developers to simplify Kubernetes, but over time, it realized that data access was a bigger problem, so it developed an open-source tool that works with GraphQL to help solve that issue.

GraphQL is an open-source data query and manipulation language for APIs, and a runtime for fulfilling queries with existing data. It was developed internally by Facebook in 2012 before being publicly released in 2015.
