Motorola Mobility to lay off 10 % of its workforce, shuts Chennai plant.

It is reported that Motorola Mobility (owned by Google Inc.) hardware unit is laying off an additional 1,200 employees, around 10 per cent of its headcount in the US, China and India. It is also learnt that Motorola Mobility’s phone-manufacturing facility in Chennai has suspended its operations at the end of February 2013.  The closure of the plant may possibly be related to the present series of job cuts or related to an earlier announcement of Motorola Mobility exiting the Indian market.

Google Inc. had acquired Motorola Mobility for $12.4 billion, a deal that initiated in mid 2011 and got completed in 2012. Earlier in August 2012, Google had announced a 20 % reduction in workforce  at Motorola Mobility – leading to lay off of about 4000 employees globally. As a part of cost cutting as well as consolidation initiative the company had announced the closure of several offices and also wind up of their presence from some geographies including India.
