Preparing for a job interview

Essentials that you need to know

Learn about the employer

This needs to be an essential part of your preparation for the job interview. It’s easy but it needs some research. These days you have lots of information about companies on the internet – the company’s web site and other platforms. Do your research so as you can justify your relevance and candidature appropriately.

Learn about the job role and the opportunity

Get more idea about the job role from the internet, from the recruiter or the consultant when discussing your candidature. The interviewer needs to feel confident that he/she is talking to a competent candidate, who knows about the company and the job role. This also allows you to present reasonable justification for your candidature.

Know – Why you are interested in the job?

Most job seekers just apply for a job for better pay, and better opportunity. However, if you have a better reason to show your interest in the job that counts in your favor. Talk about possibility of learning and growth in the job. You can talk about the fact that as per your research the company is a great employer and you would love to be a part of the organization.

You can think on these lines:

  • How your skills and experience are relevant for the concerned job?
  • How does the job add value to your career goals?

Technical and Functional knowledge

Beyond the above, your technical and functional knowledge is everything. So you should be good at what you do ,and you should be able to explain it well. The recruiters are interested in assessing your relevance, your potential, and your ability to deliver. Most of these are going to be assessed based on what you say, and how you say it.

Being prepared is everything. When you are interviewing for a job – it’s like a sales pitch – you must understand the opportunity, you must be interested and must demonstrate that you are a suitable candidate. Being well prepared – makes you appear more confident, makes you appear relevant and gives you an edge as compared to others in line for the job.
