Coronavirus: Tata Motors to shut Pune manufacturing plant

As India witnesses, a spike in coronavirus positive cases, organizations around the country have started increasing their precautionary measures to safeguard their employees during the time of a pandemic. The novel coronavirus, which originated in the Wuhan City of China is now spreading really fast in the state of Maharashtra.

Responding to the increasing tensions in the state, Tata Motors Ltd announced that it will close down its manufacturing plants in Pune by March 24.

Through an official statement, the company said, “We have decided to rapidly scale down activities at Pune site to get to skeletal operations by end Monday, 23 March and be ready for plant closure by end Tuesday, March 24th, if the situation warrants. We shall remain in this mode till March 31 and will review it in due course.”

Calling the ongoing pandemic ‘a complex situation’, Guenter Butschek, managing director and chief executive, TML in the note said, “a large part of our workforce operates in our plants and our engineering research center or ERC – Pune. Their work cannot be done remotely and therefore we have people working on-site in these locations with a heightened degree of personal hygiene and safety.”

In the internal memo addressed to the TML employees, the senior executive said that the company continues to closely monitor the situation in all states where it has production plants and offices and will make appropriate decisions if required.

Butschek also urged the employees with travel history to affected countries to practice self-quarantine. “I call upon each one of you to avoid going out to the extent possible,” he said, requesting employees to impose social distancing. He also encouraged the TML employees to participate in the Janta curfew on March 22 from 7 am to 9 pm as suggested by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.
