Tata Sons to give full payment to daily wage earners amid coronavirus pandemic

Tata Sons recently announced that it will ensure full payments to temporary workers and daily wage earners for the month of March and April in view of the coronavirus pandemic.

Tata’s temporary workers across offices and production sites in India will be eligible for the payment even if they fail to report to work due to precautionary measures, including site closures.

Announcing the measure through an official statement, Chairman of Tata Sons, N Chandrasekaran said, “The current situation is likely to have a large and deep financial impact on the weaker socio-economic segments of our society.”

Calling the Covid-19 outbreak a major global crisis, Chandrasekaran said that all Tata Group companies have been asked to exercise extreme caution while also enabling work-from-home.

Expressing concerns about health and safety of employees, he said, “We have asked our companies in India to rapidly and extensively adopt WFH to ensure that employees travel only in the most essential cases, excluding situations in which they are involved in the delivery of products and services for the larger public good.”

The MSME sector, which was already facing financial crunch through 2019, is now under serious damage due to the outbreak. Tata Group Chairman addressed the issues and assured close cooperation with the sector.

He said, “Our group companies follow a policy of making timely payments of legitimate dues. Under the current situation, we will monitor this closely to ensure that such dues are paid on an immediate basis in order to provide liquidity.”

He added that group companies would ensure that all dues to micro, small and medium enterprises working with them are paid off immediately to provide them with liquidity.

“The outbreak of COVID-19 is a major global crisis. The government is taking many proactive steps and precautionary measures to contain this threat in India,” Chandrasekaran said.

“These are tough and uncertain times, and the nation needs our collective efforts. Each day matters in our fight against this disease,” he added.
