Wendy’s to open 250 Cloud Kitchens in India; partners with Rebel Foods

The Wendy’s Company has partnered with Rebel Foods to set up 250 cloud kitchens across India. Consequently Mumbai-based cloud kitchen operator, Rebel Foods will partner with Sierra Nevada as part of the deal.

Sierra Nevada is a master franchisee of the Wendy’s and is set to open another 150 brick-and-mortar restaurants of the American fast-food firm in India.

Launched in India in 2015, the quick service restaurants chain operates four traditional restaurants here along with five cloud kitchens in Delhi’s National Capital Region. Around the globe, the company with its franchisees runs 6,800 restaurants.

Abigail Pringle, chief development officer of The Wendy’s Company, stated in a statement – “We are delighted to welcome Rebel Foods into the Wendy’s family and to expand our relationship with Sierra Nevada Restaurants. This reflects Wendy’s commitment to growing our international business in strategic high-growth potential markets through both traditional restaurant expansion and digital innovation.”

Kallol Banerjee, cofounder of Rebel Foods, said – “This is a game-changing partnership. For generations, brands building a national presence relied solely on a brick-and-mortar strategy and made significant investments over decades. By partnering with the Rebel Foods network of existing kitchens in India, Wendy’s will get immediate access to rapid scale across the country, at far lower levels of capital.”

The company, backed by Sequoia Capital, was founded by INSEAD alums Jaydeep Barman and Kallol Banerjee in 2010. The company was formerly called as Faasos and rebranded itself as Rebel Foods Pvt. Ltd. in 2018.

Rebel Foods operates over 2,100 internet restaurants and an estimated 300 cloud kitchens across three countries. In February, Bennett Coleman and Company Ltd (BCCL) announced that it has picked up an equity stake in cloud kitchen startup Rebel Foods.
