Cigarette maker Godfrey Phillips India Limited announced the appointment of Ajay Vohra as Additional Director on the company’s Board, with effect from July 1, 2023.
According to the company’s exchange filing, “we wish to inform you that upon recommendation of the Nomination and Remuneration Committee, the Board of Directors at its Meeting held today, i.e. May 27, 2023 has approved the appointment of Mr. Ajay Vohra (DIN 00012136) as an Additional Director to serve as a Non-Executive Independent Director of the Company for first term of five consecutive years starting from July 01, 2023 up to June 30, 2028, not liable to retire by rotation, subject to approval of the Shareholders in the ensuing Annual General Meeting of the Company.”
Ajay Vohra, a qualified chartered accountant and lawyer and has been practicing since last 39 years in the area of domestic and international tax and is a leading arguing counsel before Tax Tribunals, High Courts and the Supreme Court. He has argued several cases involving complex issues having wide ramifications, which has contributed immensely to the tax jurisprudence in the country. Prior to being designated as Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in September, 2014, Vohra was the Managing Partner of Vaish Associates, Advocates, a leading law firm from 2006 to 2014.
Vohra has been rated as one of the “most highly-acclaimed legal experts in the Asia-Pacific region” in the field of Taxation by Asialaw Leading Lawyers Guide for each of the years 2006 to 2014, prior to his designation as Senior Advocate. The Legal 500 has inducted him into the Hall of Fame for Asia Pacific for having been recommended as a “Leading Individual within Tax for 13 consecutive years”. Vohra has been regularly contributing articles in various journals and addressing seminars nationally and internationally. He has been the past Chairman of International Fiscal Association – India Branch, past Chairman of the Direct Taxes Committee of the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry as also member of the Managing Committee uninterruptedly for several years, Vice Chair of the Tax Law Committee of the International Pacific Bar Association.
