Zomato elevates CEO Mohit Gupta as its co-founder

Food-delivery unicorn Zomato recently announced that it has elevated its Chief Executive Officer of Delivery as the company’s Co-Founder. His elevation was done through the company’s Founders Program.

Announcing the elevation of Mohit Gupta, main founder Deepinder Goyal said that Gupta had managed to tick all the boxes as a part of Zomato’s founders programme and, hence, the elevation.

In a similar move last year, foodtech unicorn had given its COO Gaurav Gupta a position in the co-founding team. Mohit Gupta has become the fourth co-founder of the company. He joins the other founders at Zomato, Gaurav Gupta and Gunjan Patidar. In their executive capacities, Gaurav Gupta is the Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Patidar is the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at the Gurugram headquartered unicorn.

“While the foundation of Zomato was built before MG joined us, he has been instrumental in significantly strengthening it over the last two years, what he and his team has built is a very large part of our business and our DNA today,” said Goyal in the letter.

The foodtech unicorn was founded by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah in 2008. After being associated with the company for 10 years, Chaddah quit in 2018.

Mohit has been handling the food delivery business of Zomato since July 2018. Under his leadership, the company has scaled up to about 40 million monthly order volume. His elevation as a co-founder has come at a time when online food ordering volume is down because of Covid-19 pandemic.

Mohit joined Zomato about two years ago after a decade-long stint at India’s largest online travel agency MakeMyTrip. He was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) at CTrip-backed public company.

An alumnus of Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta, Mohit had earlier worked with companies like Pepsico International and online fashion store Zovi. He spent about 10 years at Pepsico handling various positions. Mohit was the Vice President for Marketing (Flavours) at the beverage giant for its India business.

Zomato’s ‘Founder Programme’ is for people who have contributed to Zomato, have helped build or scale businesses, and have demonstrated a founder’s mindset. Every year, the company assesses and announces deserving individuals as founders at Zomato.
