GE to invest $ 200 million in its new manufacturing facility in Pune

GE is establishing a new manufacturing facility at Chakan, Pune to develop localised products and solutions for the energy sector in its first phase of operations commencing 2013. GE India today (15th June 2012), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Maharashtra , followed by a ground breaking ceremony at the proposed site located at MIDC Industrial Park, Chakan, Pune. The facility would be spread over 68 acres , and GE plans to invest about $ 200 Million in building this facility. GE already has a wind turbine assembly unit in Pune.  The proposed facility is expected to generate employment for about 2000 people.

The focus on manufacturing is in line with the need for localized products and solutions suited to Indian customers across GE’s various businesses present in the country. The facility, to begin with, will focus on Energy products and technologies driven by the industry needs for power generation, transmission & distribution as well as measurement & control. In addition, GE will package its environment friendly technologies such as hybrid batteries for energy storage and biogas power generation technologies at the plant. The site will enable assembly and production support for any GE business that needs local manufacturing capability in India.

Speaking on the occasion, John Flannery, President & CEO, GE India said, “Our new manufacturing facility aligns well with the Government’s objective of strengthening manufacturing and overall infrastructure of the country. We are thankful to the Government of Maharashtra & MIDC for their continued support in helping us expand our technology and manufacturing capabilities in India. GE has been consistently working towards developing technologies and products that are localized for India, we will continue to invest in the country’s infrastructure and contribute to improving the quality of life for the people”.
