Govt appoints Harsh Vardhan Shringla as new foreign secretary

The Cabinet on Monday approved the appointment of Indian ambassador to the United States Harsh Vardhan Shringla as the next foreign secretary. He will replace Vijay Keshav Gokhale with effect from 29th January, 2020. The decision makes Harsh Vardhan Shringla as the 33rd foreign secretary of the country.

A 1984-batch IFS officer and a fluent French speaker, Harsh Vardhan Shringla has served on various positions, from an ambassador to Bangkok (2014-2016) to a High Commissioner to Dhaka for two years.

Harsh Vardhan Shringla has also served at UNESCO in France, UN in New York besides Vietnam, Israel and South Africa. He served in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) as Joint Secretary for Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Maldives and therefore understands the neighbourhood well.
