Gurugram to work from home till 31st March 2020

The District Magistrate, Gurugram has issued an advisory to all offices located in Gurugram district to allow their employees to work from home till 31st March 2020.

As per the advisory issued by DM, Gurugram:

“In compliance of “The Haryana Epidemic Disease, Covid-19 Regulations 2020 dated 11.03.2020″ notified under Epidemic Disease Act, 1897, all MNC, IT Firms, Industries, Corporate Offices situated in District Gurugram are advised to allow their officer/employees to work from their home till 31st March, 2020 with immediate effect to prevent and control the spread of COVID-19 in larger public interest.”

While this comes as an advisory, and not a mandate – most companies in Gurugram, including MNC’s, IT companies have already implemented work from home for most of their executives who can work remotely. For most businesses however, this may not be possible considering the nature of work, and the infrastructure deployment and preparedness needed to implement it for all employees.

In an earlier statement, while addressing media on 16th March, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had said – “We have issued advisories banning mass gatherings and asking people to avoid unnecessary travel as precautionary measures. Likewise, I appeal to the management of all MNCs in Gurugram, especially IT companies as they can afford it, to restrict employees from coming to the office and give them an option to work-from-home.” Earlier Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare had issued advisory related to need for social distancing to counter spread of the pandemic, and had suggested private companies to allow employees to work from home, and limit meetings involving large number of people, and addressing business meetings through online platforms, video conferencing etc.

Work from home, stands as one of the key factors that can support social distancing to a limited extent considering large offices, office campuses, housing thousands of employees in a centrally air conditioned set up.
