Indian-American Sunder Pichai gets massive salary hike from 2020

Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, will take home a stock package worth $240 million on top of a $2 million annual salary in 2020. Out of the stock package, Pichai to get $90 million on the basis of Alphabet’s performance. Recently this month, Sundar Pichai was named the CEO of Alphabet as the co-founders decided to relinquish their current positions in Alphabet. The decision made Sundar Pichai as CEO of both Google and Alphabet.

In terms of grants related to CEO appointments, Sunder Pichai lags behind Tim Cook’s grant of $376 million when he took over Apple. Pichai has been widely credited for making Google’s ‘chrome’ browser a success and was seen as a potential successor to Microsoft Corp CEO Steve Ballmer before Satya Nadella took over in February 2014. 

According to Equilar, a leading provider of Board Intelligence Solutions, said, “As per the most recent statement from the company, Pichai earned nearly $1.9 million in 2018, that included the costs for his security and personal use of aircraft. His base salary in 2018 stood  $650,000, whereas Median CEO’s base salary reached $1.2 million that year.”

Also, as per Mercury news report, ”In a filing to the Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) on Friday, Alphabet said Sundar Pichai will also start receiving a substantial raise to $2 million a year starting January 1.” Page and Mr Brin will continue their involvement as members of Alphabet’s board of directors.

Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the former Montessori kids who founded Google as Stanford grad students in the late ’90s, had designed the company’s famously open culture to facilitate free thinking.
