GoDaddy acquires South African startup Over

GoDaddy has recently has entered into an acquisition agreement with South African startup Over for an undisclosed amount. Over is a social content developer startup that through its app lets businesses create photos and videos for their social media content.

Over claims to have more than 1mn active users on its platform who are using their services to create more than 220,000 projects every day.

Talking about the acquisition GoDaddy’s Vice President of Growth and Product Justin Tsai said, “The acquisition is about acknowledging a world of entrepreneurs who may never have a website.” He further added, “Over’s capabilities really target those set of people, who may have an Instagram profile where they need to post visually engaging content but have never gone to GoDaddy.”

Over’s co-founder and CEO Matt Winn said, “The goal, is to “build guitars, not violins” — in the same way, that someone can pick up a guitar and “strum a few cords,” they should be able to download Over and quickly “start creating really great content.”

GoDaddy and Over were initially in talks for collaboration but later on found an opportunity to integrate the products more deeply which led to the acquisition.

Post the acquisition, Over’s team of 76-people will join GoDaddy but will continue to operate out of its Cape Town, South Africa headquarters.
