Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has announced the appointment of Chitta Ranjan Mohapatra as Director In-Charge of its Bhilai Steel Plant. The decision follows a nomination by the Ministry of Steel and approval by the company’s Board, effective July 15, 2025.
Mohapatra, currently Executive Director at SAIL, brings over three decades of experience within the organisation, having joined in 1989 as a Management Trainee at Rourkela Steel Plant. A Chemical Engineering graduate from REC Rourkela, he has held several key leadership roles across SAIL’s units, including in project execution, utilities, and material management.
Prior to this appointment, Mohapatra served as Executive Director (Projects) at Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), later overseeing the Materials Management and Works divisions. Under his leadership, BSL reported improvements in productivity and profitability.
His new role at Bhilai Steel Plant comes at a time when SAIL continues to focus on efficiency and capacity optimisation across its operations.
Mohapatra’s elevation reflects SAIL’s internal growth pathway for long-serving technocrats, reinforcing the importance of institutional knowledge in succession planning. For employees, it could signal continuity in leadership style and operational rigor, particularly at plant-level operations where Mohapatra has deep expertise.
