Sony Corp. to cut 10000 jobs

Sony Corp. plans to cut a total of 10,000 jobs worldwide, or about 6% of its workforce, possibly by the end of this year – as per a news report by The Nikkei – Japan’s leading business news publisher. This move is seen in a direction at getting the corporation back to profitability. The company which is looking at a $ 2.7 Billion net loos this financial year would be looking at measures to reduce operational costs, hive off some business units and consolidate business like chemicals and LCD operations.

Earlier the company has hinted at selling part of one of its chemicals and devices subsidiary that makes films and adhesives using in television, cameras and mobile phones to the Development Bank of Japan.

Kazuo Hirai whose appointment as CEO of Sony Corp. was announced in Feb 2012, has formally taken over his role from 1st April 2012. He is expected to present his brief on the business plans and way forward this week. Organizational changes including re-organization and job cuts are expected to be announced later.
