Will the lockdown continue after April 14 ?

We all have been trying to work out the plans for our work life post lockdown. Businesses and business managers have been planning their next course of action – to take stock of damage inflicted, to work out their manpower strategy, etc. and to re-calibrate their work related processes once normal work life resumes. Those who lost their jobs, or were placed on leave without pay would be wondering about their next step. However, it appears that the nationwide lockdown is here to stay for most of us, and work from home will continue to be the new normal, for at least some more foreseeable time. Best guess for the same (based on various reports and actions / announcements by different state governments) could be at least another 15 days ( end of April), with some restrictions in place till end of June.

Prime Minister Modi had earlier metioned about the possibility of phased lifting of the lockdown after April 14th, however it appears that the lockdown will continue for the time being. In an all party meeting today represented by floor leaders of political parties in Parliament, held through video conference the Prime Minister discussed the issues related to Covid-19 pandemic, took suggestions, and highlighted government actions. The suggestions placed by the political leaders and the discussion hints at the extension of lockdown.

Various state governments have proposed an extension of lockdown, as well as complete complete “seal off” of affected areas. UP government has announced complete seal off ( of identified hotspots) of 15 districts that are severely affected. These include key districts that form a part of NCR – Noida, Ghaziabad, housing many business / back offices of leading corporate & IT service companies. As per a report by an expert committee set up by Kerala Government, the state would not be ready for lifting of lockdown by April 14, and it may be relevant to continue for some time with subsequent phased exit, and some restrictions being in place till end of June. As per media reports, Maharashtra government officials have hinted that it may not be possible to lift travel restrictions in state even if center lifts the lockdown, and they need to look at the prevailing situation at least till end of April, to get a better hang of happenings and to plan the way forward.

During the all party interaction today, the Prime Minister mentioned that priority of the government is saving each and every life. As reported by PIB, during today’s meeting – the Prime Minister, warned that the situation keeps changing continuously and one needs to maintain vigil at all times. He underlined that the situation in the country is akin to a ‘social emergency’, and the country has been forced to take tough decisions, and must continue to remain vigilant.

He said that several state governments, district administrations and experts have asked for extension of the phase of lockdown. During the meeting, the participants placed their suggestion related to extending the lockdown and on a phased exit after lockdown ends.

Looking at the points discussed during the Prime Minister’s video conference with political leaders, it appears that the lock down is here to stay for some more time. Businesses, business managers, working professionals have to plan their way around it. As said by the Prime Minister, as per the PIB release- “in these changing circumstances, the country should simultaneously try to bring about a change in its work culture and working style. “
