Placement challenges for MBA Class of 2012

Class of 2012Looking at inputs from Industry experts on hiring plans from B Schools, for the 2012 Batch, it seems that the cautious attitude of businesses are going to impact the placement seasons at various business schools – specially the ones falling lower in ranks.

Students from established b schools , with good branding, reputation and a well established alumni network may still have opportunities coming their way, however those graduating from lesser known, and relatively new schools may face the heat this season.

Planning your career amidst uncertainty:

Well, this is not the first time this would be happening. In fact the 2009 batch, also had to face a similar or may be worse scenario.

We are offering some suggestions for you, if you happen to be in a state of uncertainty:

  • Focus on smart research for available opportunities, look out for companies that are hiring – and well there are many. There will always be bulk of opportunities at frontline level in Banking, Insurance etc.
  • Some sectors that may have opportunity for you: Banking & Insurance, Hospitality, Online Retailing, e-commerce, Media, Exports , Retail, FMCG etc.
  • Develop yourself, get ready in terms for knowledge and outlook to be relevant for the prospective employers. If you are smart, knowledgeable, confident – you will definitely be able to crack any interview.
  • Remember, that when ever you get hired from campus – it’s the easier story – good money, a well established training period and mentoring for you to develop and become productive over a period of time. On the other hand , if you get a direct placement in any company, your smartness, ability to deliver starts getting assessed from Day 0 at work. In fact ,your ability to land up and crack an interview totally depends on your ability to reach out to the right employers, and put in a smart pitch for yourself for a suitable job.
  • Since, most of the opportunities available for fresh MBA’s are going to be in Sales – don’t be too choosy. Sales can be good job to start with. It also helps you develop well as a confident professional. Avoid getting into the trap of trying to land some opportunity in Strategy / Marketing etc.
  • For HR Graduates, its easier to get an opportunity in a recruitment firm , consultancy firms.
  • Be quick and smart enough to grab what ever decent opportunity that comes your way. Don’t get caught in the compensation expectation trap.

If you are smart, a good learner and a great performer – eventually you will find your way. Just try to ensure that the opportunity allows you an opportunity to learn, and develop yourselves.
