Amazon, the American e-commerce giant and cloud computing company has decided to open a new office in Manchester and will be creating more than 1000 jobs in the fields of research and development in the UK.
The new Manchester office will be house at least 600 new employees working on software development, machine learning and research and development.
The e-commerce giant will also take on more than 250 high-skilled staffers in its Edinburgh development center and 180 in its Cambridge facility.
The UK trade secretary Liam Fox hailed the move saying it is the “signal to the world that the UK is very much open for business.”
In Edinburgh, work centers around new advertising technology and personalized shopping recommendations, while in Cambridge, the retailer focuses on innovations in Alexa, Prime Air drones and its cloud computing division Amazon Web Services.
Doug Gurr, Amazon’s UK country manager, said the new roles were “Silicon Valley jobs in Britain and further cement our long-term commitment to the UK”.
“It’s all about investment in really great people,” he added.
Since 2010, Amazon said it had invested about $12.15 billion in Britain and was on course to employ 27,500 people including more than 6,500 in its corporate, AWS and R&D divisions by the end of the year.
