E-commerce giant Amazon Inc recently announced that it has extended its work-home-home advisory to include employees in New York and New Jersey. The move is aimed at lowering the risk of coronavirus transmission among the employees.
In an official statement, the company said, “We continue to work closely with public and private medical experts to ensure we are taking the right precautions as the situation continues to evolve.”
Amazon, however, did not mention whether its policy applied to fulfillment center workers, specifying that it’s only for “employees who are able to work from home.”
The company said its work from home advisory includes its Seattle headquarters, the San Francisco Bay Area and greater Milan, Italy through the end of March.
Other tech giants like Google and Microsoft have also embraced work-from-home policy to prevent the transmission of the virus on their campuses, which have cafeterias and other communal spaces for employees to congregate.
Amazon last week said that one of its Seattle employees tested positive for the virus. The novel coronavirus originated in China late last year and since has come to at least 105 countries and territories, infecting more than 110,000 people and leading to thousands of deaths. The World Health Organization has recently declared the outbreak as a pandemic.
According to the company website, Amazon has created more than 7,000 full-time jobs in New York and more than 17,500 in New Jersey.
