The Solar Alliance International (ASI) announced it has appointed Ajay Mathur as the new CEO, effective from March 15, 2021. Mathur succeeds Upendra Tripathy, who has served as CEO since 2017.
Mathur’s appointment as ASI leader has come in a year in which the primary goal will be to address global climate change transition commitments: 2021 has begun with the renewal of the change of course in US climate policy to through the Biden administration and will culminate with COP26, the United Nations Conference on Climate Change, in the UK in November, the release said.
ASI is the only multilateral forum dedicated to the transition of solar energy and, based on the milestones achieved, among which are the pooling of resources among its members and the creation of economies of scale to reduce the cost of clean energy, the Alliance is poised to renew its commitment to the global solar transition with the new leadership.
Speaking at the ASI special assembly, Mathur said: “I am honored to lead the International Solar Alliance and hold high expectations of what we can achieve with solar energy together with our members and partners for the transition to a safer, more sustainable, equitable and prosperous future for all “.

Mathur brings extensive leadership experience in all key areas of the energy transition, from policy, research and commercialization of technology to financing, cooperation international and institutional development. He is currently CEO of the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), a key driver of the energy transition to renewables and the reduction of urban air pollution for the past five years. Mathur has also held senior positions in the India Office of Energy Efficiency and the Green Fundfor the Climate. In 2020, he received an IconSWM-CE Lifetime Achievement Award for his contribution to protecting the environment.
