Bharti Airtel’s CEO Sanjay Kapoor to quit.

Sanjay Kapoor, Bharti Airtel CEO for India and South Asia (Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) has quit and would be moving out of his role by end of February 2013. He had been in this role since March 2010.

The position of CEO would be taken over by Gopal Vittal, group director, special projects. Gopal had re-joined last year, and in his earlier stint he was with Bharti Airtel as director marketing. Once Gopal Vittal takes over, the South Asian businesses which includes Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will be a part of company’s international division headed by Manoj Kohli.

In a statement the company said  Sanjay – “has decided to pursue his future aspirations outside of Bharti”.

Sanjay Kapoor, has been with Bharti Group since 1998, when he joined the cellular business of Bharti, as COO and in 200 became one of the youngest CEO’s in Telecom. In 2003, he took over as President and Chief Executive Officer of TeleTech India.(joint venture between Teletech and Bharti Enterprises). He got back to Bharti Airtel in March 2006 in the capacity of President of Bharti Airtel’s Mobile Services.

In March 2009, Sanjay was elevated to the role of Deputy CEO, Bharti Airtel Ltd. As the Deputy CEO, he was responsible for the Mobile, Telemedia and DTH businesses. In March 2010, Sanjay was appointed the CEO, Bharti Airtel Ltd (India and South Asia).

Prior to joining Bharti Enterprises, he had been with Xerox for about 14 years in varied roles.
