Former Airtel Executive Manoj Kohli to head SoftBank India

SoftBank India has appointed Manoj Kohli to head its business in India. The move comes after a nearly five-year stint as the chairman of the Japanese telecom and investment giant’s renewable energy business SB Energy.

Manoj Kohli, the former Bharti Airtel executive, has an experience of over 40 years. He has headed Airtel’s international operations and worked at companies like DCM Shriram and Escotel before joining SoftBank. 

“In this new role, Kohli will be responsible for supporting SoftBank, SoftBank Vision Fund, and their portfolio companies’ interests in India. He will be responsible for government relations and public policy efforts, working closely with portfolio company founders and CEOs,” said a statement from SoftBank to the media. 

SoftBank Vision Fund has been making appointments to build its team in India. The company started making changes with the hiring of Sumer Juneja last year to lead investments. Then it roped in Vikas Agnihotri, who was till recently Google India’s interim country head, as its first operating partner in the country.

SoftBank’s arm SB Energy Global is headed by Raman Nanda, who has been with SoftBank since 2011. Recently, the company announced target of setting up 20 GW of capacity in the next five years in India despite challenges. The company looks forward to become a global 100 gigawatt-company.
