The government of India has appointed Bipin Rawat, Army Chief General, as new Chief of Defence Staff. With him being the CDS, smooth coordination among the army, air force and navy is expected to happen, as tri-services agencies on cyber and space came up during his tenure as the Army Chief. Importantly, some of the strongest military actions against Pakistan have taken place during his tenure, with stiff resistance being given to Chinese military aggression along the India-China border.
In a PIB statement, the Government said, “Government has decided to appoint General Bipin Rawat, as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) with effect from December 31, 2019 and until further orders and extension in service of General Bipin Rawat with December 31, 2019 and till such period he holds the office of CDS.”
General Bipin Rawat was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1978 and is currently serving as Chief of the Army Staff since January 01, 2017.
