Following the disastrous fire accident in SAIL’s Bhilai Steel Plant, Chhattisgarh, the CEO of the plant M Ravi was fired today.
Along with him, T Pandya Raja, general manager (safety) and Naveen Kumar, deputy general manager (energy) were also suspended.
Nine people had died and 14 others were injured in the gas pipeline blast, Tuesday. Of the 14 injured people admitted to the burns unit of Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Bhilai, two died late on Tuesday night, a public relations officer of the Bhilai Steel Plant told news agency PTI.
Dr. Maneesh Singhal, head of the department of the Burns Unit at the AIIMS-Delhi has reached Bhilai, an official PIB statement said. “Those being treated at the hospital are in a serious condition have 70-80% burn injuries,” a plant official said.
Union Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh visited the injured employees of the plant at the hospital.
Union Minister of State for Steel Vishnudeo Sai had said that a four-member high-level committee was constituted by SAIL to probe the incident.
The blast took place around 10:45 am on Tuesday following a fire in a gas pipeline in the gas pipeline connected to the coke oven section of the plant during a scheduled maintenance job, SAIL said in a statement.
This is the second such incident in the last four years at the Bhilai Steel Plant, which is widely rated as one of SAIL’s best facilities. In the earlier accident, six lives were lost when the main header of pump house no 2, which supplies water to the Gas Cleaning Plants of the blast furnaces, suddenly ruptured in the evening of June 12, 2014.
