Flipkart plans to create 70,000 jobs ahead of festive season

E-commerce giant Flipkart said it has plans to create 70,000 new jobs and employ more people as delivery partners, ahead of the Indian festive season in the coming months. The move is in line to meet the surge in online shopping which is expected to boom in the festive season that lasts till Diwali.

Post the outbreak of the pandemic, India’s e-commerce business has been on the rise as people are opting for shopping online. Seeing this, Flipkart, Amazon.com Inc’s Indian unit and Reliance Industries Ltd’s e-commerce business are vying for a share of the booming online retail market.

The company said it would also sign up more than 50,000 kiranas, or small grocery stores, for last-mile delivery, reports Reuters.

“While creating direct job opportunities across Flipkart’s supply chain, that include delivery executives, pickers, packers and sorters, there will also be additional indirect jobs created at Flipkart’s seller partner locations and (local corner stores),” the company said in an emailed statement.

Amitesh Jha, Senior Vice-President, Ekart and Marketplace, Flipkart, said, “Flipkart understands the importance of festivities in the lives of our consumers and ecosystem partners. We are focused on creating impactful partnerships that offer great consumer experience while creating additional opportunities for progress of the entire ecosystem as it scales for the Big Billion Days (BBD).”

Earlier this month, Flipkart launched an online wholesale service, Flipkart Wholesale, for mom-and-pop stores and other small businesses.

“By generating employment and enabling our sellers to scale their businesses during this time, we’re doing our part to drive growth in the industry and the economy,” Amitesh added.
