How employers are focusing more on employee wellness

Employees around the world spend most time of their lives at workplaces. Workplaces have become a second home for many individuals. But workplaces are demanding. They need you to be efficient and productive at all times.

In order to be more productive, more useful, more energetic and more contributing to the workplace one needs to be physically, mentally and psychologically fit. To achieve that one needs to have a roadmap that can help employees in maintaining their wellbeing. Employers are beginning to realize the gravity of employee wellbeing in today’s times as output is getting compromised due to work-stress or disturbance in work-life balance. Several measures such as work from home, employee wellness programs and music at the workplace are used to keep employees fit, energetic and motivated to deliver better.

Companies have begun to realize that employee wellness is critical and proper measures should be adopted in that direction to create a workforce that is sound and healthy. Accenture is one such company that has taken initiatives in that direction. Accenture offers employee assistance programs, which provide confidential support for issues like stress, substance abuse, depression, and anxiety. Additionally, employees are offered Teladoc services, where they can ask a physician any health-related question 24/7. As for fitness, Accenture’s innovative wellness program allows employees to set health goals and offers rewards for completing healthy activities. The company offers special rates and discounts for gyms and fitness centers as well as an online fitness program, so employees can workout anytime.

Similarly, Google has its wellness program that includes onsite healthcare services such as a physician, chiropractic, physical therapy, and massage services, as well as access to fitness centers, classes, and community bikes. Google wellness program also includes workers’ financial wellness resources, flexible working hours, vacation time, and volunteer time, helping its employees in achieving a better work-life balance.

Employee awareness sessions can be one of the simplest and easy to implement approaches to promoting wellness at the workplace. Organizations can plan informative sessions on general health and fitness, lifestyle diseases, mental health, etc. to keep employees informed, aware and sensitive towards the need of staying healthy and fit.

On similar grounds, Cadila Pharmaceuticals conducts wellness programs under its ‘HappyShift’ initiative that introduces the concept of conducting mental and physical wellbeing sessions. HappyShift was started by the company as per the suggestion of one of its employees in ‘Azad Soch’- a platform where employees can suggest ideas regarding the organization.

Recently, Cadila conducted a session on arthritis for its employees where a leading doctor and expert on the subject shared knowledge and insights on Rheumatoid Arthritis. Awareness was created on how a healthy lifestyle with regular yoga, nutritious diet, and stress-free living can prevent many illnesses.

As per Dr. Sunil Singh, CHRO, Cadila Pharma, – “In our busy lives, we often forget to look after our body leading to problems later like arthritis. Since we lead a very luxurious lifestyle, our comforts have taken a priority over physical work which leads to various ailments. With multiple wellness sessions, we want our employees to stay updated about their health and take necessary precautions to lead a healthier, longer life”.

Such wellness programs can cover simple health tips, as well as information on major critical illnesses that are impacting employees directly or indirectly. Such programs are informative to employees and make them aware of ways to stay fit and healthy. Employees are familiarised with some easy ways through which symptoms of some illnesses can be recognized at early stages and proper precautionary steps can be taken to prevent them.
