In an attempt to reduce its carbon footprint and achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos announced the introduction of electric delivery rickshaws in India.
The details of the plan are not yet made public by the company, however, CEO Jeff Bezos through twitter announced the use of e-rickshaws for door-to-door delivery.
The fleet is part of the company’s climate pledge. Bezos has previously announced to make the e-commerce giant net carbon neutral and promised to buy 100,000 electric delivery vans from US start-up Rivian. Cutting carbon footprint is a task for the company that delivers about 10bn items a year. In September last year, Bezos had said that Amazon would rely 100% on clean and renewable energy by 2030.
Bezos who was on a three-day visit to India promised a $1Bn investment in the country. The investment will help digitize micro and small businesses in cities, towns, and villages across the country. He also vowed to export Indian-made products worth $10bn annually creating one million jobs by 2025.
