Sequoia Capital’s Surge backs 7 early-stage Indian startups for its third cohort

Venture Capital firm Sequoia Capital India’s recently announced that it has selected 15 early-stage startups from Southeast Asia- and India for its accelerator program Surge’s third cohort. Out of these 15 startups, seven are from India, while one-third of the startups in the batch have women founders.

According to an official statement released by the accelerator, the program has invested US$1mn to US$2mn in each of the participating startups, which come from Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam, and India. Collectively, the Surge 03 startups have raised over US$39mn in their Surge rounds.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the latest cohort is taking place online for the first time. The selected companies will take part in day-long sessions held once a week for 15 weeks, including online workshops, small group discussions, and chats with Surge mentors such as Tokopedia founder William Tanuwijaya and Sequoia Capital global managing partner Doug Leone.

“It’s been incredible watching our Surge founders build innovative, global-first businesses from the region. Our past Surge cohorts have displayed relentless drive, tenacity, and passion to create real impact in their respective industries and communities, and Surge 03 is no different. We are proud to be able to partner with this current cohort of ambitious founders who are building their companies in one of the most challenging periods in modern history”, said Rajan Anandan, Managing Director, Surge, and Sequoia Capital India LLP.
