Amazon to hire 75,000 employees to keep up with consumer demand

The coronavirus pandemic has impacted several jobs globally with nearly 10mn people have filed for unemployment benefits in America alone. The pandemic has forced businesses to close operations and employees have been sent on furloughs for indefinite periods. The International Labour Organization has predicted that globally around 2.5mn jobs would be lost due to the pandemic, but E-commerce giant Amazon seems to show no signs of slowing down.

The company has recently through its company blog announced that it would be adding 75,000 more employees to its workforce to keep with the demands. In a statement, the company said, the move is to meet “customer demand and assist existing employees fulfill orders for essential products” during the pandemic.

Earlier in March, the company had announced that to hire 100,000 new employees and assured a $350mn investment to increase employee pay. It has also said that it would increase the pay by $2/hr in the US, C$2/hour in Canada, and €2/hour in the European Union countries where it has operations.
