Nissan’s new Chief Executive Officer Makoto Uchida has recently claimed that he would accept being fired if he fails to turn around the automaker’s fate. Nissan has been struggling with declining sales in the aftermath of controversies surrounding Carlos Ghosn, it’s Ex-Chairman.
Makoto took over the top executive job in December last year and has been facing troubles since his appointment. In the last shareholder’s meeting, he put his job on the line after facing demands from cutting executive salaries to offering a bounty to bring Ghosn back to Japan from Lebanon.
Amounting to pressure from board and shareholders, the former Nissan’s China chief took aggressive steps to revive the company. Interestingly, Uchida is Nissan’s third CEO since September.
After being heckled by shareholders about the company’s future, Uchida said he was ready to face dismissal if he failed to improve profitability at the company. “We will make sure that we steer the company in an effective way so that it is visible in the eyes of viewers. I will commit to this: if the circumstances remain uncertain you can fire me immediately,” he said.
However, Uchida didn’t provide a fixed timeframe for improving the performance. Nissan is reportedly on course to post its worst annual operating profit in 11 years.
According to a BusinessLine report, Uchida pleaded with shareholders to be patient while he comes up with a strategy by May to recover from crumbling profits. “If you can be patient a little bit longer, on a day-to-day basis you will be able to sense we are changing,” he said.
