Infosys to incentivize mid-level executives

Infosys has announced to offer incentives and hikes to over 25,000 mid-level executives – nearly a tenth of its workforce – who will acquire new digital skills.

Boosted by the development, major IT companies have now been witnessing flat growth in traditional services, which account for nearly two-thirds of their revenue. Whereas, digital businesses have been growing much faster. So, upskilling of mid-level managers becomes crucial as they are to power digital businesses, in which they need to work with clients to solve challenges.

“We have created comprehensive learning pathways for the mid-level managers. We have created something called digital tags and have linked incentives with them. While there are quarterly skill incentives, there is another pay growth on better billing (once they become experts in digital technology),” Krishnamurthy Shankar, group head of HR at Infosys, told ET.

“When we looked at it (upskilling the mid-level employees), we came up with four things that are areas where we will ensure there is investment in them. So, specialisation in digital is the first area and we have identified 36 skills,” Shankar said. He even added, “The second important area for upskilling is expertise in process areas such as becoming an agile coach, while the third is becoming a specialist in their own service lines. The fourth core part is becoming a consultant.”

As digital becomes core to the business of IT service companies, major companies are working at ensuring that the mid- and senior-level managers remain relevant, and are exploring new ways to train them. Even, analysts say that upskilling of mid level managers is becoming more relevant because companies such as Infosys are forced to take a consultative approach.
